After graduating from the College of the Holy Cross (B.A.), Kristen spent six years in publicity, technical writing and marketing for small firms and a large Fortune 500 data communications company. She graduated from New England Law (J.D.) and was admitted to practice in 1991, joining her father in private practice at Gardner, Sawyer, Gates & Sloan (1913-2013). There she gained experience in a wide range of civil matters including contract, real property, corporate and probate law. She has appeared before the Probate, District, Superior and Supreme Courts of Rhode Island, the federal district court, various state administrative agencies, and municipal courts and boards. Kristen served as co-counsel in a property case before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C.
While stepping away from practice to raise children, she coached mock trial at the Moses Brown School in Providence, teaching the students trial presentation and Rules of Evidence, culminating in the team’s appearance in the state championship semi-final round.
In 2013, Kristen pursued mediation training through the Center for Mediation and Collaboration RI and began mediating in RI District Courts. In addition to her role as an active member of CMCRI’s Board and Executive Board between 2014-2021, she served as an instructor for its basic mediation training program. In 2017, she opened her own law practice in Jamestown, RI, expanding her work to non-profits, municipal, and GAL matters. She provides independent mediation services to the RI Department of Education, mediating matters between students/families and school districts. She handles private mediations in all types of civil matters through Key Mediation LLC, a legal mediation practice she co-founded in 2020. In 2020, she also began serving as in-house counsel for Portsmouth-based Streamline Marine LLC. She volunteers annually at RI Superior Court Mediation/Settlement Week and speaks to middle and high school students in the classroom for RI Law Day. She has spoken at RI Bar Association seminars on mediation and other topics and contributed articles to the RI Bar Journal: “When is Mediation a Good Choice for Your Client?” and “Useful Mediation Styles: Facilitative and Evaluative.” Since January 2020, her legal practice and her Key Mediation LLC partnership have been located in The Mill at Lafayette, an historic building in North Kingstown.
